CHARLIE PARKER – KANSAS CITY BIRD
Charlie Parker had a difficult relationship with his hometown of Kansas City, due to both the strict segregation laws on the one hand and the relationships he had with the friends and family he had there on the other.
These recordings were partly recorded between 1941 and 1951 at the homes of those friends, and have always remained privately owned, which is why no one knew of their existence. Parker sounds very relaxed on the recordings and he is given the space to improvise and here slowly shape the jazz as it would look in the years to come. Superlatives quickly do such a release short, but still: Spec-ta-cu-lair.
