The year-end lists are done, time to dust off the live albums. Would that have been the logic? Anyway, besides live albums by The War On Drugs, among others, we look back at the best rock music of the past year. The usual suspects aside.
The Best Rock Albums of 2024

Who would have thought that the ' savior of rock 'n' roll' would be a tall, lanky guy like MJ Lenderman ? The 25-year-old guitarist from North Carolina brings multiple generations together on his big breakthrough Manning Fireworks . He wouldn't have been out of place on The Last Waltz , grew up with Smog and Jason Molina and sings deliciously screeching anthems about masculinity in 2024. 'I'VE GOT A HOUSEBOAT DOCKED AT THE HIMBO DOME!' CD / LP

Mdou Moctar plays so fast you can almost hear them stumble. Mdou Moctar plays as if they want to single-handedly liberate West Africa from the colonial powers. Funeral For Justice is overwhelming and to the point. Hyper-political but also (not entirely unimportant) a rock-solid example of blues rock - or as they would call it in Niger ' tishoumaren '. CD / LP

Chat Pile is completely between melody and noise, as if it is about to fall off a cliff. The noise rockers on the edge of sludge metal draw on the music of Korn and Jesus Lizard on Cool World . On their debut they sang about how shitty the US is, now they also involve their anger and frustration in the rest of the world. CD / LP

Sprints ' fiery debut Letter To Self was released on January 5th of this year, so you're forgiven if you've forgotten about it. But the Irish, who mix all their anger and fatigue into a super-exciting, unruly sound a la Savages and Gilla Band, deserve your attention. And if not, frontwoman Karla Chubb is screaming for it. Yes, Adam Granduciel is the central figure of The War On Drugs . He also ensures that on the second live album, Live Drugs Again . ' WOO ! ' But what this expertly collected set (the version of 'Under The Pressure' is a compilation of six(!) different shows) shows more than ever is how magical the band as a whole can sound. Especially with a crystal clear sound like this. CD / LP

The recordings of The National , live in the Parco Della Musica Ennio Morricone in Rome , are not very important. The 'definitive live album' is guided by the atmosphere and the songwriting. It is a wonderful setlist - drawing on the twenty years that the band has been active. From live favorites like 'Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks' to unexpected deep cuts. Forza, Matt Berninger. Forza! CD / LP . |

Dua Lipa 's very first live album is not just any album. Flawless choreography and spectacular visuals are not to be heard on LP. A fourteen-piece choir and a full orchestra are. Live From The Royal Albert Hall is a musical show where the pop star pulls out all the stops - and so does Elton John. It places her 'old' hits and the music of Radical Optimism in a beautiful, warm stage light. CD / LP
