The Great Retrospective has begun. In the coming weeks, we will highlight a number of favorites from this year per genre. An impossible task, of course. But fun work.
The Best Jazz Albums of 2024

Charles Lloyd once played with Gábor Szabó, Cannonball Adderley and, yes, The Beach Boys. But the 86-year-old saxophonist has no interest in looking back or resting on his laurels, as evidenced by The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow , a forward-thinking piece of post-bop full of improvisation and warm-blooded experiment. You can almost see the grass growing on the cover of Bleed . After forty minutes of silent playing, The Necks have completely turned your sense of time upside down. What starts with a very sparse piano is very gradually expanded with electronics and percussion. Call it ambient, call it post-minimalism, call it a pleasant Sunday morning. CD / LP

The new age debut album of Caribbean-Belgian jazz musician Nala Sinephro , Space 1.8 , unexpectedly sold like hot cakes. Her second, Endlessness , is even more ambitious. Divided into ten movements, Sinephro skillfully cleanses the soul and is reminiscent of Alice Coltrane's Journey in Satchidananda and Floating Points' Promises . CD / LP

Kamasi Washington calls Fearless Movement his 'dance album' and you can let loose here and there, but even more than that, the saxophonist's fifth album portrays the feeling of freedom that comes with dancing. In twelve tracks and over an hour and a half, Washington gives the guests at his party (including Terrace Martin, Thundercat, George Clinton, André 3000) all the space. CD / LP

Here it is at last. The Anthology version of The Tortured Poets Department , which saw the light of day digitally, less than two hours after the release of the parent album. On the extra fifteen tracks that this new version is rich in, Taylor Swift leans on the acoustic side and her collaboration with Aaron Dessner ( folklore , evermore ) is central. CD / LP

With a USP like that, you have to show off. DeWolff recorded Muscle Shoals in... Muscle Shoals Sound Studios in Alabama, the legendary studio where Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding and The Rolling Stones once recorded. That history resonates. Even Leon Russell's piano can still be heard on Muscle Shoals. Southern rock at its liveliest. CD / LP
