Sun Ra - The futuristic sounds of sun ra (LP)
2024-03-08
First of all: 'The Futuristic Sounds Of Sun Ra' is one of the most accessible albums in his oeuvre, and the story is also very good, so read on.
Sun Ra's and the core members of his Arkestra moved from Chicago to New York to play, but while crossing the Washington Bridge one of the cars hit a taxi. With no money to pay for the damage, they stayed in a hotel in New York, waiting for money from their label, and waiting for gigs. Both did not come. Band members called home and left. And with even fewer band members left, they went into the studio, recorded 'The Futuristic Sounds Of' and with poor distribution and liner notes that were wrong on all sides, the album was doomed to oblivion. Furthermore, the marketing was nothing to write home about; the album was 'briefly mentioned' in a list of other completely forgotten artists (who remembers Little Lucy Smith?) and that was that. Also funny to see that a certain 'Art Blakely' released an album.
Until twenty-three years later, after a re-release, the reviews came in: Excellent , according to AllMusic, and four stars according to Rolling Stone. 'The Futuristic Sounds Of Sun Ra' is a traditional sounding record in the style of Duke Ellington, with sounds from 'other worlds' for the futuristic effect. This ultimate edition has rightly been taken out of the jazz annals.
