Album of the Week
It doesn't get much 'greater' than Miles Davis' Second Great Quintet. Wayne Shorter on sax, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams on drums. Miles in France 1963 & 1964 , part eight in Davis' bootleg series , shows the group in all its glory. Carter writes about the recorded shows at the Festival Mondial Du Jazz and the Paris Jazz Festival: "Davis had us do what the chemist has his protégés do in the lab. Take these chemicals and see what you can make of them. As long as you call the fire brigade when necessary." The fire alarm goes off regularly, for example halfway through a twelve-minute version of 'My Funny Valentine', only to calm down again with the same intensity and play stoically on while the audience searches for a moment of applause. 'Walkin' appears at almost every show during that period, sometimes lasting nine and sometimes twenty minutes and is without exception alchemy of the highest order. 6CD / 8LP

Sylvie Kreusch is a 21st-century yé-yé girl who once shared a record collection with Warhaus' Maarten Devoldere (full of Gainsbourg, Cohen and Hardy) but has been making a name for herself for a few years now. On Comic Trip , a smoky, sultry and tempestuous album that will steam up your record player, she once again proves herself to be an inimitable pop star noir. CD / LP
Is Bobby Gillespie the last remaining member of the original Primal Scream line-up because he's such a troublemaker? On their first album in eight years, he certainly shouts, in Glaswegian style, Come Ahead ! Come Fight Then! Gillespie lets the genie out of the bottle and celebrates conflict and compassion on a punchy record full of funk, gospel and disco lights shining on the brawl. CD / LP
One of the most pleasant surprises of the year for fans of trip-hop and hip-hop: the joint LP by James Blake and Lil Yachty , Bad Cameo . It turns out to be a good combination, partly because Blake stays close to home and especially Yachty adapts to his sound. The end result is atmospheric, surprisingly subdued and euphoric when it shoots up. LP
From youth centre to Ziggo Dome , Typhoon has quite a climb behind him, but there is no time to catch his breath. Live celebrates the rapper's twenty years of activity, recorded in Paradiso and Carré (one pop temple was not enough), and ticks off all the hits and crowd favourites at breakneck speed. Never seen the man live? Now you can experience the magic at home. CD / LP |
