Album of the Week
Porridge Radio is the album of the week, if only because Clouds In the Sky They Will Always Be There For Me , the successor to Waterslide, Diving Board, Ladder to the Sky (2022) would otherwise leave little room to mention what a special streak the British band has now achieved. Three more-than-solid slacker indie albums in a row, on which frontwoman Dana Margolin seems to dig a little deeper each time, to sing a little more teasingly. On Clouds In the Sky it sounds several times as if Margolin, and with her the entire band, are struggling, struggling, screaming to stay above water. At other times Porridge Radio is more subtle than ever before. The synth sounds in particular are an enrichment. Not to be missed if you like Sharon Van Etten, Big Thief, Wednesday and/or Dry Cleaning. CD / LP
New in
Keyword: epic. Blaudzun is no stranger to a bit of pathos, but Latter Days is teeming with anthems. Imagine: slow-motion marathon finishes, emotionally charged car rides on long, dark highways, a family reunion in the presence of Joris Linssen. Johannes Sigmond stomps, shouts, honks and blows as if his life depends on it. CD / LP
After the huge success of Tension, Kylie Minogue comes back with Tension II barely a year later . In her fifth decade as a world star, Minogue keeps the momentum going. A new twist is Tension II not, but is again teeming with hits and guest stars, including Sia, Bebe Rexha, Tove Lo, Diplo and, yes, Orville Peck. Is there a new 'Padam Padam' on it? Listen for yourself. CD / LP
Rag'n'Bone Man is very happy. A shame, you might almost think, for a singer whose lyrics always seem to come from his toes. But hope and joy also keep the music of the Brit interesting, as What Do You Believe In proves . Life is celebrated with slick gospel, but also admired with acoustic blues. Pink cover, rose-colored glasses, same soulful wrecking ball. CD / LP
Writing new songs was not possible for a while, after the death of one of her band members. But, Roos 'Roosbeef' Rebergen thought , maybe I can give my existing songs a new look. Here comes the SunSunSun Orchestra (who previously worked with Tamino, John Cale and Het Zesde Metaal) around the corner. Songs like 'Radio' get a beautiful new life with just strings and piano.
